Fiat’s current product portfolio, which currently only consists of the Linea and Grande Punto (and the latter’s hotter Abarth and crossover derivatives), will not comply with the upcoming stricter safety and emission regulations. There has been minimal investment in both these ageing products, which have been on sale for around a decade. Hence, investing in upgrading the Linea and Grande Punto, which are well beyond their lifecycle and whose combined sales were just 101 units in 12 months (from December 2017-November 2018), would be pointless.

I really didn’t think I’d see this day, FCA.

‘Tumbbad’ is an Incredible Experience

Tumbbad Still Image from Film

I usually don’t post movie reviews here on Nuclear Bits, but ‘Tumbbad‘ calls for an exception. It is an incredibly crafted genre-defining flick and if you love watching movies, do make sure that you watch it before the theaters end its run.

I happened to watch Tumbbad last night and I must say, it is an incredible experience, very unlike anything coming from Bollywood. It’s so refreshing to see a flick that cares about creative vision, intricate set designs, cinematography, and sound design. There’s no big-budget star cast, no larger-than-life glittering sets, and no over the top music and dance sequences. Yet, Tumbbad manages to present a really skillful and perfect artwork on the screen that offers an absolutely fascinating visual and audible experience. It’s a “must-watch in the theaters only” kind of film.

I loved the way the cinematographer has crafted most of the frames in the movie. The lighting, the movement of the camera, and the way each shot is precisely made possible, backed by Rahi Anil Barve’s fabulous direction, is nothing short of commendable.

I know a lot of people who’re skeptical about it, thinking it’s a horror film. But there’s a stark difference between the typical horror stuff with jump scares that we’re used to seeing, and what Tumbbad delivers. It’s a ‘Fantasy Horror’ film, but one that’s based on a powerful storyline with a primary theme of ‘greed’. It won’t leave you looking over your shoulder once you step out of the theatre and around the corners at home, it just isn’t your exorcism and “bhoot-preyt” kind of horror. What it is, is thrilling, gripping, and surreal.

Lastly, one of my favorite parts of the film is its background score by Jesper Kyd. Tumbbad is scored by Jesper Kyd — the same man behind the popular games like the Hitman series, Assassin’s Creed series, Borderlands series, Darksiders II and State of Decay. His music is what brings the film to life in the theater.

Airtel India has today launched pre-orders for the new Apple iPhone XR on the Airtel Online Store. The phones will start shipping on October 26th, just in time for the Diwali festivities.

The iPhone XR can be purchased from the Airtel Online Store in two ways — either at Full Price or in Easy Installments with an Airtel Postpaid connection.

If you opt for Easy Installments, you can grab the 64GB iPhone XR model with a one-time down payment of ₹14,999 and then monthly payments of ₹3499. This takes the effective price of the phone to almost ₹99,999. As part of the Postpaid connection, you get:

  • 100 GB Data per month
  • Netflix for 3 months
  • Amazon Prime
  • Free Handset Damage Protection
  • Unlimited Calling

If you are looking to purchase an iPhone XR this year, but are unable to purchase one using your banking finance options, this is a good option for you to consider. Unfortunately, though, the pricing set by Airtel is much higher compared to the other phone models available on the Online Store.

Mozilla has published a statement on their Open Policy and Advocacy blog about the recent report that it is possible to purchase a cracked software for as little as ₹2000 (US$30) to get ‘write’ rights to the Aadhaar database, allowing you to update any information in there without any kind of verification or checks.

The official Mozilla statement is as follows:

Mozilla is deeply alarmed by recent reports that it is possible to purchase editing rights to the Aadhaar database for a mere 2,000 rupees.

Mozilla has long argued that the Aadhaar lacks critical safeguards. With the demographic data reportedly compromised, it is hard to see how Aadhaar can be trusted for authentication. Access to myriad vital public and private services which require Aadhaar for more than a billion Indians is now at risk.

Mozilla calls for the UIDAI to close these glaring security loopholes, and to engage an independent firm to do a security audit of the Aadhaar. We further call on the Justice Srikrishna Committee and the Government of India to ensure that the forthcoming data protection bill strongly protects Indians, including from the privacy and security harms that they’ve already suffered from Aadhaar.

Navi Mumbai registered average 4G speeds of 8.72 Mbps in OpenSignal’s latest measurements, which track average 4G download speeds among 20 of India’s largest cities between December and February. Elsewhere, second-placed Chennai saw its 4G speeds nearly double, jumping up from 4.4 Mbps in our last post in March 2017. At the other end of the scale, Allahbad was only city to register less than 4 Mbps with average speeds of just 3.5 Mbps.

Mumbai ranked fifth on that list with an average 4G speed of 6.97Mbps, followed by Hyderabad at 6.71Mbps and Delhi at 6.69Mbps.

The investment in Gamma Gaana Ltd. totals $115 million, and Times Internet Ltd., the Indian media and technology company that started the business, will also participate, said the person, who wasn’t authorized to discuss the information publicly and asked not to be identified. Tecent and Gaana didn’t respond to requests for comment. Times Internet declined to comment.

I’ve always liked Saavn, but may be it’s time to check out Gaana too.

Writankar Mukherjee, reporting for ETtech:

Top smartphone distributors, led by Ingram Micro and HCL, are entering the business of selling refurbished smartphones in the country where they will refurbish old handsets sourced locally and then sell them, which will help them bypass government restriction of sourcing old phones from abroad.

and

Ingram Micro is launching the refurbished handsets under its own brand focused on iPhone. The company, which will also offer six months warranty on these handsets, has tied up with third-party manufacturers such as Dixon Technologies for this, an executive said. The pricing will be 40%-60% lower than the current selling price for a new model.

I don’t know how to react to this.
