Unread App has a new home

Unread is currently my favorite RSS Reader app, both on my iPhone 5 and iPad mini with Retina display. It is a fantastically crafted app by Jared Sinclair and thanks to its minimalistic UI and focus on Typography, quickly replaced Fiery RSS for me. I subscribe to a lot of personal blogs and a lot of my time in the app is spent reading what others are writing — so good typography matters.

Unfortunately, Jared recently announced that he was taking up a full-time position at BlogLovin, which meant the development on his apps was to cease. Thankfully, Unread has found a new home, with the folks at Supertop. Supertop are the folks behind Castro and Tokens.

On their blog, they write:

Unread makes an excellent companion to our podcast app, Castro. Both apps are news/entertainment focused, share similar design goals and even rely on the same underlying feed technology. We are grateful to Jared for trusting us with the future of Unread and look forward to developing and refining both of these apps for years to come.

I’m glad Unread will live on and look forward to the improvements they bring to the app.

New iCloud Pricing for India

With the launch of iOS 8 on September 17th, Apple has revamped the pricing for iCloud storage. The pricing is far more affordable now and you can get up to 1TB of storage for $19.99 a month. Every account comes with 5GB of Free storage and has the option to upgrade to 20GB for Rs. 60/month, 200GB for Rs. 250GB/month, 500GB for Rs. 600/month or 1TB for Rs. 1200/month.

This new pricing is already live if you have iOS 8 or Yosemite running on your devices.

Apple slashes iPhone prices in India

The 16GB and 32GB iPhone 5S variants now have a MRP of Rs 44,500 and Rs 49,500 respectively. The 8GB iPhone 5C, on the other hand, sees its price drop to Rs 31,500.

Interesting move. The iPhone 5s Gold has been selling for around 35-36k on Amazon & Flipkart over the last few days, so I wonder what effect this price cut has on those prices.

With the imminent launch of iPhone 6 in India next month (likely October 17th), I’m hoping it is priced just below the 50k mark.

Ars Technica’s Moto 360 Review

Ron Amadeo reviews the Moto 360, complete with benchmarks comparing it with the LG G Watch and the Samsung Gear Live.

The Moto 360 is a big step forward for smartwatches, but it’s still not the excellent hardware we’re looking for. There’s a great design here, but it’s marred by a power-hungry processor that can’t keep up with Android Wear. The battery life and performance is a deal breaker. For a “convenience” product that is supposed to be all about fast access, having it be slow or dead really defeats what little purpose a smartwatch has.

It’s disappointing to see a watch that was so hyped fail so miserably at basics.

Dropbox Introduces a More Powerful Pro Plan

Dropbox now has just one “Pro” paid plan that costs $9.99/month and comes with 1TB of space, along with these new features:

  • Passwords for shared links
  • Expirations for shared links
  • View-only permissions for shared folders
  • Remote wipe

This makes Dropbox Pro pretty solid, but the entry barrier is still high for most users. I’d love to pay for ~100GB of space for around $1.99/month.

LIFX App for iPhone v1.8

I love my LIFX bulb and the team has been adding some great new features to it, like LIFX Cloud and today’s update to their iPhone app brought some amazing new features.

Scene Alarm (wake up naturally in the morning with gently increasing light), Geofence (switches on your favourite scene when you arrive home), On Vacation setting (simulates an occupied home by switching lights on and off randomly when you’re away) and Hold-to-breathe (identify a bulb or group in-app with a tap-and-hold see it pulse gently).
