Unclutter App

I just stumbled across Unclutter App while browsing the Mac App Store today and instantly realized what a great little utility it was. Often when I’m working on something with a lot of apps open, I end up saving files directly on the Desktop so that they’re easier to access during the course of the project and also easy to remember. Over time, these files start piling up on the Desktop, making it untidy and messy. If you’ve ever wished for a way to not get into that mess, Unclutter is here to help you.

Unclutter is a tiny Menubar utility that opens a tray from the top of the Desktop, revealing three little windows called ‘cards’. You invoke the tray by moving the mouse to the top of the menubar. There is a ‘Files’ card, a ‘Notes’ card and one that shows the contents of your Clipboard. Let’s say you want to quickly jot down someone’s phone number of Address — simply invoke Unclutter and type in the number in the Notes card. Ended up downloading a file on the Desktop? No problem, just move it into the Files card. The Clipboard window shows you any text or image you currently have in your CLipboard. These cards can also be turned into individual floating windows by simply dragging them out onto your Desktop, so you can stack them next to the app you’re working with.

Unclutter comes from the developers of DaisyDisk, which is a fantastic app that visualizes the disk usage on your Mac and helps you clear up space. You can buy Unclutter from the Mac App Store for just $1.99 until Feb 7th, after which the regular price would be $2.99.

Prices of 128GB iPad with Retina Display in India

128GB iPad 4 with Retina Display

Apple has just announced that iPad with Retina Display, commonly known as iPad 4, will be available in a 128GB version starting February 5th, 2013. This 128GB version will be sold along with the regular 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions of the iPad and will be available in all Apple Authorized Resellers and Apple Shops across the country.

Apple has also announced the prices of these new 128GB version iPads for India.

128GB Wi-Fi only Model: Rs. 46,900 ($799+tax in the US)
128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular Model: Rs. 56,900 ($929+tax in the US)

It’s interesting that the fully loaded a 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model of the iPad, that offers twice the storage capacity, is still cheaper than the full-loaded 64GB iPhone 5 sold in India, which costs Rs. Rs. 59,500.

Poster 2.0

Poster is by far the best WordPress app available for iOS today. I have already written about how good the app is and recommend it to anyone who has an iOS device and writes for a WordPress blog. In fact, its features and UI are far better than the official WordPress app available for iOS. Today, Poster has been updated to version 2.0. With this major release, the app continues to get even better and brings a plethora of new features.

Poster now features support for Custom Post Types in WordPress. If you have customized your blog by adding Custom Post Types for anything, Poster will let you enable them from the settings. Poster now also lets you edit a post’s excerpt, set the post as Sticky & even lets you add images anywhere in a post by tapping and holding down the cursor when you’re in the editor. Other notable features that this release brings include:

  • Localized for English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish
  • Edits to published posts can now be saved locally before re-publishing
  • Option to remove a post’s featured image
  • Re-order your blogs within the interface
  • Ability to assign custom labels to custom fields
  • Improved speed when syncing posts
  • Edits to posts are automatically saved. There’s no need to manually save a post anymore.

This version also brings along robust support for a URL Schema for Poster. If you’re the developer of an app, you might want to take a look at that.

Poster still sports the same beautiful and minimal UI identity of its and this release manages to make it an even solid app. It’s available on the App Store for $2.99 as a Universal app.

1Password 4 for iOS

1Password by AgileBits is one of my favorite apps on iOS and also the very first app I install on a new iOS device. 1Password holds every single password I’ve used on any website, service or app & other information in it and has been a reliable companion ever since I first bought it for my Mac. It has truly become a crucial app to have these days.

While 1Password has been a functionally fantastic app on iOS, it wasn’t all that well with its UI. All that changed with the release of v4.0 of the app a couple of days ago. Every corner and pixel of the app has been redesigned, and beautifully at that. The app’s UI now uses some stunning icons for categories and overall has a nice feel to it.

Additionally, 1Password also gains a ton of new features, including a full-fledged in-app browser with a URL bar and tabs, a Vault, Folders & Global Search, Action Bar on every item (swipe to perform actions), a Demo mode to show off the app to your friends without disclosing your private data and a complete PC-less setup, along with syncing via Dropbox or iCloud.

Also new with 4.0 is that the app is now a single, Universal app. Previously, 1Password was available in 3 versions — iPhone, 1Pad and a Universal “Pro” version. With 4.0, AgileBits are now selling just a Universal app and it’s currently available at $7.99 on the App Store (Launch special price, regular price is $17.99).

The Botched iPhone 5 Launch in India

Tomorrow could be a big day for all the Apple enthusiasts in the country. After months of excitement and a few weeks of wait, tomorrow, November 2nd, 2012 is when iPhone 5 is supposedly being launched in India. I say supposedly because this is one of the most badly botched product launches in a country I’ve been witness to.

There is a tremendous amount of confusion among the consumers and prospective buyers in the market today regarding this launch. For starters, Apple India and their PR has been completely mum about the launch of the iPhone 5 in India and there have been no announcements from their end about it. When Apple launches their other products in the country, we in the press community receive Press Releases at least 2 weeks in advance stating the price in INR at which the product will be available in the market. However, things are different with the iPhone. The Indian market does not work like the other major markets for Apple. Up until last year, the sales of the iPhone were completely handled by Apple’s partner carriers — Airtel, Aircel and previously, Vodafone. This year, reports surfaced that Apple would be handing the sale of the iPhone 5 on their own, exclusively. BGR.in also exclusively reported, first that Apple would launch the phone on October 26th but later revised the date to be as November 2nd. So up until this point, BGR was the only source of reports/information about Apple’s iPhone 5 plans for India.

Last week, Redington and Ingram Micro, two distributors of Apple products in India sent out press releases “confirming” that the iPhone 5 will go on sale on November 2nd at Rs. 45,500 for the 16GB model, Rs. 52,500 for the 32GB model and Rs. 59, 500 for the 64GB model. This was quite surprising for me because again, there was no word from Apple about the launch and believe it or not, we’re one day away from it and we still haven’t heard from them.

After these press releases went out, Apple’s premium resellers throughout the country — most notably Imagine Stores, Unicorn Stores and Reliance’s iStores and other online retailers like Indiatimes Shopping, Saholic, etc started taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5. Customers were asked to pay around Rs. 5000 to 10,000 to prebook their iPhone, but no specific delivery date was being promised as the retailers themselves had no clue when the stock was going to arrive or in what quantity. It is widely being reported that only 16GB models will be arriving in the stocks tomorrow for sale, with the 32 and 64GB models arriving at a later date. Again, no certain information is available anywhere. Additionally, Airtel and Aircel, who had both put up “Coming Soon” teasers on their websites have also started taking pre-orders for the phone now. While Aircel is listing all the models as “In Stock”, Airtel is only listing the 16GB Black model that “Ships in 6 – 8 days”.

Yesterday, I was told that there were “launch events” being held tomorrow in multiple cities and at multiple locations in these cities. For example, there are two events happening in Mumbai — one at Inorbit Mall, Malad and another at Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel. It appears that these events are being held by Apple’s distributors and you can guarantee an iPhone 5 for yourself by visiting any of the premium resellers and getting a pass. I’m told that this only guarantees a phone for you, no specific color or model is guaranteed. So if you want a 32/64GB model, you may be out of luck. Airtel too is apparently holding its own event tomorrow at 6:30 PM. That said, no invites are sent to these events and no announcement has been made either.

As you can see, it appears that everyone in the country has decided to sell the iPhone 5 tomorrow, but Apple themselves have made no announcement about it. There is no information available when the phone will be available for sale in electronic superstores like Croma, Vijay Sales or Hypercity. It is not known whether the phone will go on sale when the stores open tomorrow morning, or whether they’ll only be available after the launch events.

The Indian market may not be as big as other markets Apple operates in, but it still has a few loyal enthusiasts like me who are excited about every product launch. Since I never upgraded from my iPhone 4 to the 4S, this is a substantially big leap for me in terms of technology, I am absolutely clueless what to do about my purchase. I wish this launch was handled better by Apple, but I’ll assume they have bigger problems to take care of.

Apple Rolling Out INR Pricing on the Indian App Store [Updated]

(See Update at the bottom of the post)

Apple today has started displaying the prices for apps on the Indian App Store in Indian Rupees (INR) instead of US Dollars. @Sirajsoft and @arvindVMA both pointed out on Twitter that some apps on the Indian App Store were starting to display prices with a prefix of “Rs” instead of the regular $ sign. Ever since its launch, the Indian App Store has always displayed the prices of apps in USD and the day’s FX rate is applicable when someone purchases an app.

A few apps are already displaying prices in Rupees as seen in the screenshots below.

The change seems to be rolling out inconsistently though, as not all of the apps are showing the correct pricing. While all the apps are now using the “Rs” prefix, some are still displaying the value in USD as it is. So while $0.99 should be Rs. 55, the value is still being shown as Rs. 0.99.

If you share a link to an app published on the Indian App Store, the price now shows up in Rupees in the browser too. I’m going to go ahead and call this a new feature and not just a bug or test, possibly in preparation of the iPhone 5 launched in India early next month. It’s also interesting to note that Apple is using a flat conversion rate of Rs. 55 per US Dollar and decided to use the “Rs” prefix instead of the now official Rupee symbol.

Update: According to @RajaVijayaraman, Apple has added the following local currencies to the App Store today.

  • Russian Ruble
  • Turkish lira
  • Indian Rupees
  • Indonesian Rupiah
  • Israeli New Shekel
  • South African Rand
  • Saudi Riyal
  • UAE Dirham

Apple seems to have updated their website yesterday and have now listed the prices for the 5th generation iPod touch models in India. It comes in two models — 32GB and 64GB and 5 different colors to choose from.

Apple will start selling them in India in the coming weeks and have priced these models as follows:

iPod touch (5th Generation) 32GB: Rs. 23,900 ($300+tax in the US)
